How do I meet with an advisor?
Current Human Ecology students can schedule appointments with their assigned advisor through Starfish in MyUW.
Students from other schools or colleges can connect with us through drop-in advising or by emailing advising@sohe.wisc.edu.
Drop-In Advising (10-15 minutes)
Drop-ins are a great option if you’re wondering:
- Can I add or drop a class?
- Am I on track to graduate?
- How do I add a major or certificate?
- Where can I find campus resources?
- I have a quick question and need guidance.
Scheduled Appointment (30 minutes)
Schedule an appointment if you’re wondering:
- What classes should I take next semester?
- How can I reach my academic or career goals?
- How should I plan for study abroad?
- What should my long-term academic plan look like?
- What should I do if I’m facing academic or personal challenges?
Yes! We welcome prospective students and families. Check out our prospective student page to learn more about ways to connect with us!
How can I get support with my application?
We’re excited you’re considering Human Ecology. Visit our Apply or Declare page to learn about eligibility requirements, application deadlines, and the declaration process.
Admission decisions are typically released about one month after the application deadline and before enrollment for the next term begins.
If there has been a significant change or you have questions about an admission decision, review the information provided in your decision email and follow the appeal process outlined there.
The Advising and Career Center does not provide application essay review, but the UW–Madison Writing Center offers excellent support for brainstorming, drafting, and revising your work.
Should I add another major or certificate?
Many Human Ecology students combine their interests through an additional major or certificate. Eligibility depends on the program you want to add.
Students CANNOT double major with another Human Ecology major.
Human Ecology students CAN pursue a double major in:
- Educational Policy Studies (Formerly known as Education Studies) in the School of Education
- Theater & Drama in the School of Education
- Health Promotion & Health Equity in the School of Education
- Global Health in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences
Human Ecology students CAN double major with any L&S major EXCEPT:
- Applied Mathematics Engineering & Physics (AMEP)
- Bachelor of Music
- Journalism
- Social Work
Human Ecology students CANNOT double major with the majors offered within the following degree programs on campus:
- School of Education (except for those listed above)
- School of Nursing
- School of Business
- School of Engineering
- School of Pharmacy
- College of Agricultural and Life Sciences (except for those listed above)
Most programs will ask you to meet with one of their advisors first. They can explain their requirements and help you understand the next steps.
For majors other than Personal Finance and Consumer Behavior & Marketplace Studies, as long as you have fewer than 60 cumulative GPA credits, a minimum 2.75 cumulative GPA, and are not on academic probation, you can switch your major in Human Ecology by re-submitting the major declaration form on our website.
If you do not meet the above criteria, you will need to apply for the major of interest. The application is available starting the first day of the fall and the spring semesters and will close the 5th Friday of the respective semester at 4pm (Central Time). If you have any questions or concerns about this process, please contact your advisor to discuss the best option for you.
Each school and college has its own process. We encourage you to meet with an advisor to discuss your goals and understand the requirements for your intended program.
How do I plan my academics?
Major credits apply directly to the requirements for your degree program. Elective credits help you reach the credits needed for graduation while allowing you to explore topics that interest you.
No. Both grades will remain on your transcript. Because many courses are not repeatable for credit, we encourage you to talk with an advisor before enrolling again.
Students in good academic standing may be eligible to take one course pass/fail each term. You must select the pass/fail option BEFORE the university deadline.
More information about Human Ecology’s pass/fail policies here.
No. Courses required for your degree, major, or prerequisites generally cannot be taken pass/fail. If you’re unsure, check with your advisor before making a decision.
Can I take classes somewhere else?
Send an official transcript to the Office of Admissions for evaluation. Once your credits have been reviewed, you’ll receive information about how they transfer to UW–Madison.
UW–Madison does not offer a winter session, but many students choose to take courses elsewhere during winter break and transfer the credits back.
Transferology and the Course Equivalency Service can help you understand how courses may transfer before you register.
How can I study abroad?
Many Human Ecology students study abroad and graduate on schedule. The key is planning ahead. Meet with your academic advisor early to discuss your goals, review degree requirements, and explore programs that fit into your academic plan.
Visit the UW–Madison Study Abroad office to explore programs abroad.
Major Advising Pages (MAPs) are a guide to your major’s academic requirements in relation to study abroad. They suggest times for students in your major to study abroad, questions to ask your advisors, and provide a list of recommended programs based on your major or certificate. The program list is not exhaustive, but can give you a place to begin your search. Check out your major’s MAP below:
If you are on an approved study abroad program, the grades earned abroad will become part of your UW–Madison grade point average (GPA). Grades earned from courses that transferred back from non-approved study abroad programs will not be applied to your UW–Madison GPA.
If you study abroad through a UW–approved program, those credits will count toward your 30-credit residence requirement. However, if you participate in a non-approved program, those credits will not count toward the 30 credits in residence.
What is the Human Ecology internship requirement?
Human Ecology majors include an internship or field experience as part of the curriculum. All the information you need to know about the internship can be found on the Find an Internship page.
How do I prepare for graduation?
Your advisor can help you review your progress, confirm remaining requirements, and create a plan for your final semesters.
As you near completion of your degree, you’ll need to apply for graduation through the MyUW Student Center. Applying lets the university know when you expect to complete your degree and helps ensure your record is reviewed for graduation.
If you would like your name included in the commencement program, be sure to apply for graduation by the deadline announced by the Chancellor’s Office. These deadlines are typically:
- Late March for May commencement
- Early November for December commencement
Where can I get help navigating a challenge?
You don’t have to figure it out alone. Academic Advisors and Academic Deans can help you explore options, develop a plan, and connect with campus resources that support your success.
We understand life happens. Reach out to your Academic Advisor to discuss your situation and learn about available resources and possible next steps.
Some situations may qualify for review through a petition or exception process. Please complete the Dean’s Policy Request Form after speaking with your academic advisor.
