Overview & Scheduling

Here at the School of Human Ecology, we are here to support your exploration of careers and help you reach your goals. Each student is assigned a career advisor to guide you through the journey.

Why Should I Meet with a Career Advisor?

Whether you are exploring potential careers related to your major, excited to start applying for internships, or ready to seal the deal on your first job or graduate school offer, our office is here to help! Our career team supports:

  • Career exploration
  • Job & Internship search tools and strategies
  • Resume and cover letter development
  • Interview preparation
  • Graduate school application process

Quick Career Consults

We offer quick career consults with a Career Peer both in person and via video chat during the Fall and Spring semesters.

Spring 2026 Quick Career Consults begin Monday, January 26th.

Quick Career Consults Schedule:

  • Mondays & Tuesdays: Resume Refresh from 1:00-2:00 PM
  • Wednesdays: Internship Intel from 1:00-2:00 PM

Location:

  • Advising & Career Center Lobby, 1194 Nancy Nicholas Hall, First Floor, East Wing

Quick Career Consults are intended for quick (10-minute) career-related questions about your resume and/or cover letter, job/internship search, or Human Ecology’s internship requirement.

For students wishing to meet virtually, email careers@sohe.wisc.edu during Quick Career Consult hours. You will be sent a link to join a Zoom call with a Career Peer when they are available to meet.

Email us

We are happy to answer quick career-related questions via email as well. Please try to include all of your questions in one email and be as specific as possible prior to emailing in order for us to best assist you.

Our email is monitored daily by our Career Peers.

Meet with a Career Advisor

For more in-depth career advising questions, such as major and career exploration, internship challenges, negotiating or evaluating job offers, mock interviews, etc. schedule an appointment with a Career Advisor.

Students may schedule 30-minute career advising appointments with a Human Ecology Career Advisor using the online Starfish scheduling tool found in the MyUW portal. Search “Starfish” and follow the instructions to schedule an appointment with your assigned Career Advisor.

You can find out who your advisor is by checking your Student Center.

For resume or cover letter reviews, please utilize Quick Career Consults with a Career Peer, Big Resume (free for UW students!), or our electronic document review service first before scheduling an appointment with your Career Advisor.

Reserve an Interview Space

Space is available in Nancy Nicholas Hall for Human Ecology students looking for a quiet location with reliable internet connection to complete a virtual or phone interview for a prospective job or internship.

Interview spaces are available to reserve during building hours from 9:00 AM-4:00 PM Monday-Friday during the academic year.

Please complete this request form at least 2 business days prior to your scheduled interview to reserve a room. If you are completing multiple interviews, please fill out a form for each. A member of our advising staff will review your request and reach out with more information.

Send Application Documents in for Review

Students who would like to have their resume and/or cover letter reviewed by a member of the career team may send documents to careers@sohe.wisc.edu for electronic feedback.

Our Career Peers review documents submitted through this service within 72 hours (not including weekends) and respond with electronic feedback, comments, and suggested edits.

Prior to sending your resume in for an electronic review, students should first run a scan of their resume through Big Resume (free to all UW students) and update formatting, spelling and grammar.

Career Peers will provide feedback on the content of the resume itself, including your bullet points, instead of focusing on format.
