Here at the School of Human Ecology, we are here to support your exploration of careers and help you reach your goals. Each student is assigned a career advisor to guide you through the journey.
Why should I meet with a career advisor?
Whether you are exploring potential careers related to your major, excited to start applying for internships, or ready to seal the deal on your first job or graduate school offer, our office is here to help! Our career advisors support:
- Career exploration
- Job search tools and strategies
- Resume and cover letter development
- Interview preparation
- Graduate school application process
Connect with your advisor
We offer in-person drop-in peer career advising at the Advising & Career Center on the first floor of Nancy Nicholas Hall:
- Mondays 1–3 p.m. CST
- Tuesdays and Thursdays 11 a.m.–1 p.m. CST
Drop-ins are intended for quick (10-15 minute) career-related questions about your resume and/or cover letter, interviewing, Handshake, etc.
Students will be seen on a first-come, first-served basis.
Students may have their resume and cover letters reviewed during drop-in advising times as well or may opt to send their application documents into our electronic review service.
Schedule an appointment
For more in-depth career advising questions, such as major and career exploration, internship challenges, evaluating job offers, etc. schedule an appointment.
Students may schedule 30-minute career advising appointments with a human ecology career advisor using the online Starfish scheduling tool found in the MyUW portal. Search “Starfish” and follow the instructions to schedule an appointment with your assigned career advisor.
You can find out who your advisor is by checking your Student Center.
For resume or cover letter reviews, please use the drop-in advising or electronic document review services first before scheduling an appointment with a professional advisor.
Send electronic documents for review
Students who would like to have their resume and/or cover letter reviewed by a career advisor may send their documents to firstname.lastname@example.org. A human ecology career advisor will review documents submitted through this service within 48 hours (not including weekends) and respond with electronic feedback, comments, and suggested edits.
We are happy to communicate with you via email as well. Please try to include all of your questions in one email and be as specific as possible prior to sending for us to best assist you.
