How to Meet with an Advisor

Advising Appointments 

Set up a 30-minute academic or career advising appointment with your SoHE Advisor using the Starfish online scheduler found in your MyUW portal. Search “Starfish” and follow the instructions. Having trouble? Contact 608-262-2608 or advising@sohe.wisc.edu for assistance. 

 Drop-In Advising 

Drop-in meetings are 10-15 minutes and are first come, first served.

Add/Drop Deadlines

University dates and deadlines. Students are responsible for being aware of important dates and taking necessary action before deadlines. Students may submit a Late Drop Request to the Academic Dean in the event that non-academic extenuating circumstances prevented a student from dropping by the deadline. 

Policy Exceptions (late drops, dual degrees, credit overloads, etc)

Late Drops, Dual Degrees, Credit Overloads, and Readmission to SoHE; Please complete the Dean’s Policy Request Form after speaking with your academic advisor.

Speak with a Student Ambassador

Student ambassadors are current SoHE students who serve as official school representatives. They can provide an insider view of the SoHE student community and share their experiences in and outside of the classroom. If you would like to speak with a student ambassador, please complete this form. 

Troubleshooting Enrollment Issues

Your academic advisor is here to help you navigate enrollment and course access issues. Before contacting your advisor, please review this information:   

If you receive an error message when validating a class in the Course Search and Enroll app or when attempting to enroll, remember to check course requisites AND section requisites for the reason.   

Major and Certificate Application

UW-Madison students with more than 60 GPA credits and/or a cumulative GPA below 2.75 must complete the Online Major Application to apply to a SoHE major. The application opens on the first day of the Fall and Spring semesters and is due on the fourth Friday. All students are required to apply for the Certificates in Textiles & Design and Design Strategy.

Major Declaration 

Ready to declare a SoHE Major: First-semester transfer students, and students with fewer than 60 earned GPA credits, a minimal 2.75 cumulative GPA, and not on academic probation in their school/college may declare a SoHE major using the SoHE Major Declaration Form 

Scholarship Information

Apply for a SoHE scholarship during the fall, spring or summer terms. 

Apply to Graduate

All students must apply for graduation in the MyUW Student Center when nearing degree completion. See application instructions. Minimal Degree Requirements: 120 credit hours, 2.0 cumulative GPA, last 30 credits completed in residence

Transfer Course Equivalency

Students can use Transferology to see how courses may transfer from public and private colleges across the country. Prior to taking any courses at another institution, current students should check with their Academic Advisor if they have any questions regarding Transfer Credit Services

Meet yourCareer Development team and chat with the appropriate advisor for assistance in identifying potential career paths skills related to your major, applying for an internship, or polishing your professional skills.

Study Abroad

Visit the UW Study Abroad office to explore programs abroad and be sure to talk to your advisor about your plans. 

Major Advising Pages (MAPs) are a guide to your major’s academic requirements in relation to study abroad. They suggest times for students in your major to study abroad, questions to ask your advisors, and provide a list of recommended programs based on your major or certificate.
